KAT MCCANN MEMORIAL FLAMENCO SCHOLARSHIP

Kat McCann was a student flamenco artist and a long-time member of the Flamenco de la Isla’s board of directors. She was instrumental in the success and longevity of the Victoria Flamenco Festival. Her love of flamenco led her to dance until a few weeks before her death in 2023. She is missed by the Victoria flamenco community, even those who did not know her.

The Kat McCann Memorial Scholarship will award $3,200 to a professional flamenco artist or a student of flamenco, based on Vancouver Island, toward the study of flamenco. This scholarship is a one-time funding opportunity.

Applicants are asked to submit a comprehensive plan for their use of the funds. Application deadline is December 1, 2024. Plan should be 500-2000 words. Application should include:

  • Are you a professional or student of flamenco?
  • What does flamenco mean to you?
  • How will the scholarship help you?
  • If financial need is a part of your reason for applying, can you elaborate?
  • When will you use the funds? (Funds must be used by December 31, 2026.)
  • How will you use the scholarship funds
  • Which organization or instructor are you wishing to study with
  • How will the flamenco community on Vancouver Island be enriched by your proposed study or use of funds? Applicants who demonstrate this benefit will be prioritized. Our interest is in the broadest benefit to the local flamenco community.

The applicant must be:

  • A resident of Vancouver Island.
  • A professional flamenco artist or a student of flamenco.

Applications will be stripped of identifying information before they are sent to the scholarship review committee. Please don’t assume the adjudicators have any necessary knowledge or context about you or your personal situation. If it’s not spelled out in your application, they won’t know it.

The funds may be used as follows:

  • For the study of flamenco anywhere in the world.
  • For tuition, travel, accommodation, or any reasonable cost associated with the study of flamenco.

The FDLIS Scholarship Committee reserves the right to award the scholarship to more than one applicant, dividing the funds among applicants, if they deem it appropriate.
